The Answers
We live in the wrong world
and slowly it is killing us.
We live in a world where correct sentiment
has taken the place of true virtue,
where being inoffensive to certain types of people
has replaced being a good person.
We live in a world with no God.
The deities which give our lives meaning
live in the temples to consumerism;
their votive images are the beautiful young
and they love only those who love them.
We seek a pain-free life
lost in affluent, soporific comfort.
We have forgotten
that suffering teaches us compassion.
We have forgotten
that injustice teaches patience.
We don't understand
why the edges of our lives
gnaw away at our confidence
and trouble our dreams.
The real world is calling us.
Yet deaf to the truth
we shut our eyes and ears
believing we have the answers.
